Biol 394 summer study abroad program in Valencia, Spain

Steven Rodermel in Valencia
Professor Steve Rodermel, Program Director,

The ISU on the Mediterranean Program is a summer study abroad program in Valencia, Spain. It is based at the University of Valencia (~50,000 students), one of the top research universities in Spain. Valencia is located on the Mediterranean Sea and is the third largest city in Spain. It offers numerous activities for students, and has some of the country’s best beaches.

The ISU on the Mediterranean Program is 6 weeks-long and enrolls about 90 ISU students from various majors, including the life sciences. Students take two courses at the University of Valencia (at least one in Spanish, introductory to advanced levels) and receive ISU credit (6 credits). Part of the immersive experience involves living with a Spanish host family.

Biology 394 is one of the courses offered in Valencia. Enrollment is limited to 30 students. Biology 394 has two modules. Students in Module I participate in a research experience in a faculty member’s lab, while students in Module II engage in field trips led by University of Valencia faculty. These trips explore the biology of the Mediterranean and are supplemented by in-class discussions.

Five ISU faculty are on-site all summer, including Dr. Steve Rodermel from GDCB, who directs 394.

Full information about this program can be found at the ISU Study Abroad webpage.
