Department and Research Center Awards
George Knaphus College Teaching Fellowship
Purpose: The departments of GDCB and EEOB, with financial support from the Knaphus family, jointly offer a summer teaching fellowship commemorating one of our finest-ever biology teachers, Dr. George Knaphus. The intent of this fellowship is to aid in the development of excellent college biology teachers by providing an in-depth mentored teaching experience at the college level
Eligibility: Applicants for this fellowship must be current graduate students in either GDCB or EEOB. Preference will be given to individuals in Ph.D. programs, to individuals participating in the Preparing Future Faculty program, and to individuals nearing completion of their Ph.D. studies.
Nature of award: The successful applicant will be provided with two months (~ 15 May to 15 July) salary at the rate of $2,500 per month.
Application and Deadline: During spring semester. Recipient announced in early April.
Sui Tong Chan Fung Fund Travel Award
Purpose: Award competition to encourage GDCB graduate students to attend and present their research results at scientific meetings
Eligibility: GDCB graduate student studying genetics
Nature of Award: $500 reimbursement for travel expenses
Number of Awards: varies – given in fall and spring semester
Criteria: Research matches donor requirements; quality of research presented; national as opposed to regional meeting; progress in graduate program; number of previous departmental travel awards received.
Walter E. and Helen Park Loomis Fund Travel Award
Purpose: award competition to encourage GDCB graduate students to attend and present their research results at scientific meetings
Eligibility: GDCB graduate student studying plant physiology
Nature of Award: $500 reimbursement for travel expenses
Number of Awards: varies – given in fall and spring semester
Criteria: Research matches donor requirements; quality of research presented; national as opposed to regional meeting; progress in graduate program; number of previous departmental travel awards received.
The Plant Science Institute Award is awarded to outstanding students with strong interests in plant life or utilization of plant life.
Awarded to graduate students with excellent GRE scores and GPA's.
College Scholarships for Graduate Students
The PFF program supplements departmental graduate preparation by offering new teaching, mentoring, and learning possibilities, which give postdoctoral fellows, Ph.D. students, and master's students further credentialing for a competitive academic job market.
Scholarship Support Opportunities Outside ISU
The Genetics Society of America established The DeLill Nasser Award for Professional Development in Genetics, an award for graduate students and postdoctoral trainees, to support travel costs for young geneticists to attend national and international meetings and enroll in laboratory courses.
The Department of Defense's National Defense Education Program SMART Scholarship Program fully funds undergraduate and graduate degrees in a wide range of technical areas, including all fields of Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and Mathematics.
All graduate students are encouraged to seek graduate fellowships from federal agencies such as the National Research Council of the National Academies, National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
