Dr. Nupur Ghoshal, who earned her B.S. degree in Genetics at ISU in 1995, was honored with the 2014 Outstanding Young Alumni Award by The Iowa State University Alumni Association.  Dr. Ghoshal received her honor at the 83rd Annual Alumni Association Honors and Awards Ceremony held on October 10, 2014, during Homecoming weekend.  This award was established in 1968 to recognize ISU alumni, age 40 and under, who have excelled in their professions and provided service to their communities.

While visiting ISU to receive this award, Dr. Ghoshal was the guest of honor at a reception given by the faculty and undergraduate students of the Genetics program, hosted by GDCB.  The reception was held during the morning on October 10 in the 1102 Molecular Biology Conference room.

Dr. Nupur Ghoshal is a leading physician and researcher in the fields of interdisciplinary education, clinical care, and dementia and geriatric neurology. She is a board-certified neurologist who earned her National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded M.D.-Ph.D. from Northwestern University and is currently an assistant professor in neurology at Washington University Medical School. Her current research interests in Alzheimer’s and related dementias have led to her ongoing involvement as an investigator in six research projects. She is a role model for women in medicine as the first-ever female Fellow of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at WU.

One of the students in the Genetics Learning Community, The Secret of Life, who attended the reception for Dr. Nupur Ghoshal commented that “it was very interesting to hear her talk so passionately about her work with Alzheimers. I loved hearing how she researched different genes and risk factors associated with the disease and how different things affect it. I didn’t understand everything she was saying, however I knew just by listening to the way she talked that she was passionate about and loves what she does.”
