    Mark your calendars. May 1 is the date of the 2023 Walter E. & Helen Parke Loomis Distinguished Lecture and IPB Mini-Symposium, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Iowa State University's Great Hall of the Memorial Union. The theme for this year's symposium  is "Plant Systems Biology and Transcriptional Regulation."

    Interdepartmental Plant Biology student organizers for the 2023 Loomis Symposium are Yue Liu, Megan DeTemple, Clarice Gonzales and Jifu Han. Faculty advisors for the symposium are Yanhai Yin, genetics, development and cell biology chair and professor, and Justin Walley, associate professor in plant pathology, entomology and microbiology.

    The Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology Graduate Student Postdoc Organization hosts a Career Panel Discussion on Friday, April 28, in 2034 Molecular Biology Building and online beginning at 4 p.m. Three Iowa State University alumni — Emmanuel Nsamba, Priyanka Bhandary and Sushma Ambekar — will speak at the event. 

    Nsamba is a postdoctoral research fellow in the Villeneuve lab at Stanford University. At ISU, he was in GDCB Associate Professor Mohan Gupta's lab.

    Bhandary is a bioinformatics scientist at Cedars-Sinai. While at ISU, the bioinformatics major was in GDCB Professor Emerius Eve Wurtele's lab.

    Ambekar is a senior scientist at Thermo Fisher Scientific. She was in the lab of Josh Beck at ISU. Her major was molecular, cellular and developmental biology.

  • Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences Symposium: Innovation through Collaboration in the Biological Sciences

    The first annual Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences Symposium, "Innovation through Collaboration in the Biological Sciences," will take place on Wednesday, April 26, in Memorial Union — South Ballroom with a poster presentation in the Sun Room, and on Thursday, April 27, in Hach Hall Atrium. In addition, a Creative Arts Showcase will be held on April 27 in the Hach Hall South side of the atrium. 

    Four speakers are lined up for the symposium.

    "Functional characterization of STRUBBELIG-receptor family 3 in regulating plasmodesmal function and plant immunity" is the title of the Monday, April 24, seminar in the Spring 2023 Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology Graduate Student Postdoc Organization seminar series. GDCB graduate student Haris Variz in the Aung Lab will present the seminar at 12 p.m. in 1330 Advanced Teaching and Research Building.
