GDCB welcomes two new biology instructors for the fall

GDCB is pleased to welcome two new instructors to the department, Dr. Johanna Kowalko and Dr. Sayali Kukday.  They have been hired as lecturers for the fall semester to teach two introductory biology courses, Biology 101 and 212.

Dr. Johanna Kowalko will be an instructor for Biology 101 Introductory Biology.  Dr. Kowalko received her PhD this summer from Harvard University.  Her PhD thesis research investigated the genetic basis of behavior in the blind Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus.  She received her BA in biology with honors from Brown University in 2005.  As a graduate student, Dr. Kowalko gained teaching experience as a teaching fellow and tutor in biology, genetics and the life sciences.

Dr. Sayali Kukday will be the instructor for Biology 212 Principles of Biology II.  Dr. Kukday received her PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Georgia, Athens in 2012.  She also received a BS in life sciences and biochemistry in 2005 from the University of Mumbai, and an MS in biochemistry in 2007 from The Institute of Science, Mumbai.  Dr. Kukday gained her teaching experience, and received teaching awards and recognition, as a teaching assistant in biology and biochemistry while a graduate student and as an instructor in biology as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Georgia.
