The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) recognized two genetics, development and cell biology (GDCB) faculty with awards at the virtual Fall 2020 LAS Convocation and Awards: Dr. Karin Dorman and Dr. Carly Manz.
Dorman — recipient of LAS Award
Professor Karin Dorman, who has a joint faculty appointment in statistics and GDCB, received a 2020 LAS Award . Dorman was nominated by the Department of Statistics.
According to LAS program information, Dorman “has spoken to hundreds of young girls about the excitement of science, mentored women in their pursuit of higher STEM [Science, Technology, Education and Math] education and guided underrepresented minority students to graduate degrees in STEM. She has served on the Alliance for Graduate Education and Professoriate (AGEP) faculty council.
Manz – recipient of LAS Early Achievement in Teaching Award
GDCB Assistant Teaching Professor Carly Manz received the 2020 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Early Achievement in Teaching Award.
The award “recognizes faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding teaching performance, usually early in their professional careers.”
According to LAS program information, Manz “excels in teaching foundational biology and anatomy courses, as attested by exceptional student evaluations, outstanding peer teaching reviews and supporting statements from students and colleagues. She promotes excellence in pedagogy through her research publications, and she has been called upon to present her effective teaching methods in faculty workshops. She has enriched the learning experience for thousands of students and inspires her colleagues by her example.”
