  • The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) recognized two genetics, development and cell biology (GDCB) faculty with awards at the virtual Fall 2020 LAS Convocation and Awards: Dr. Karin Dorman and Dr. Carly Manz.

    Dorman — recipient of LAS Award for Inclusive Excellence

    Professor Karin Dorman, who has a joint faculty appointment in statistics and GDCB, received the 2020 LAS Award for Inclusive Excellence. Dorman was nominated by the Department of Statistics.

    The award “recognizes faculty and P&S [Professional and Scientific] staff who have advanced the college’s mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion outside of their compensated responsibilities through their teaching, scholarship, service, or campus-community outreach.”

    Clark Coffman, associate professor in genetics, development and cell biology, received two honors at the annual Learning Communities Institute in 2020.

    Coffman and Stacey Barnes from the Office of Admissions received the Learning Community Scholarship Award for publications and presentations about their work with learning communities. Coffman was also recognized for serving five years as a learning community coordinator.

  • Jeff Essner, professor in genetics, development and cell biology (GDCB), received an Exemplary Faculty Mentor Award from the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost in 2020.

    According to Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost information, the award recognizes “mentors who go above and beyond the formal expectations of Iowa State’s mentoring program. Winners are nominated by their ‘mentee’ for the positive impact they have made in their lives and careers.”

    About receiving the award, Essner said, “I am very lucky and honored to work with such wonderful junior colleagues.”
