Sweta Roy-Carson, a genetics, development and cell biology graduate student, received a Fall 2017 Teaching Excellence Award recently from the Iowa State University Graduate College.

Roy-Carson said she was pleasantly surprised to learn she received the award. "I love teaching and want to pursue it in the future, so this award was more than special for me. Getting acknowledged for something you love and receiving affirmation from your colleagues who are amazing teachers themselves is such a great feeling. I hope I can continue helping students learn and love biology."

Senior Teaching Lab Coordinator Linda Westgate in biology nominated Roy-Carson for the award. In her nomination statement, Westgate praised Roy-Carson for her "positive and enthusiastic" teaching on a variety of topics. "She encourages and challenges students to both learn and to question topics beyond what was presented to them. In addition to being a great asset to the teaching team, she has served as a mentor and guide to new graduate students just starting to teach the same course."

Roy-Carson has been teaching Biology 211 Lab for several semesters. She is majoring in bioinformatics and computational biology, and her major professors are GDCB's Dr. Julie Kuhlman and University Professor Drena Dobbs.
